Message	External factors aid in the phase change. Just like when water vapor condenses, it wants to condense on another surface. Condensation nuclei. With frost, it is changing phase directly from a gas to a crystalline solid. That which has something to adhere to will crystallize first. It would be unusual to form a crystal in thin air or a perfectly smooth surface. A sharp surface would be much better.
